Professional contractor proposals 'would create exemption from IR35'Tax and Accountancy NewsPosted on: 09 February 2010![]() Contractors could find themselves exempt from IR35 and other legislation if proposals from Professional Passport (PP) are accepted.
The independent professional membership organisation has said that people in the sector should be given the opportunity to declare themselves as professional contractors, a job role which should be recognised by the government. If the measures are approved by Whitehall, it would mean that contractors would no longer be governed by IR35 and the agency workers directive, which many feel are of no benefit to workers in the sector. Crawford Temple, managing director of PP, told ContractorCalculator that professionals would be exempt from legislation governing vulnerable workers "by default". And he added: "The legislation would still be there helping the flexible workers who need it." IR35 may be in for a dramatic overhaul if the Conservative Party has its way. Mark Prisk, the shadow business minister, told the Telegraph that the tax would be reformed if the Tories come to power.
